(Atlanta) The 23 member Georgia delegation to the USA Nationals returned home Saturday with a lot of medals. But the hardware was almost secondary to the experiences for these special Olympians.
Competing in softball and rhythmic gymnastics, the kids from Georgia won a total of 11 golds, 9 silvers and 1 bronze medal.
But as Kelli Britt, the program manager of Special Olympics Georgia put it, "they did things they've never done before in their lives". thanks to a long list of sponsors and arrangements made by Cessna, four private jets carried the group to and from Lincoln, Nebraska, the sight of the competition.
Family and friends greeted the group at Peachtree Dekalb airport shortly after 11 Saturday morning, one week after they departed for Lincoln. The memories however, will last a lifetime.
